Astronomical events, such as a solar eclipse, are relatively rare. Having a countdown to such an event helps to build up the anticipation.
This sample countdown clock will countdown to the start of the annular solar eclipse, that will be visible in Africa, India and China on the 15th of January 2010. The eclipse starts at 05:14 UTC and the greatest eclipse is at 07:06:33 UTC.
The predefined Venus Transition takes place on June 6th, 2012, but starts at 22:09 UTC on the previous day (June 5th).
You can find more dates of solar and lunar eclipses and other astronomical events, such as Mercury transitions, at NASA's Eclipse Home Page.
